PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This position is primarily responsible to inspect, operate and mechanically test rental equipment and recommend an overall condition status level that will be used to establish rental equipment abuse charges to be assessed to the customer as well as what repairs should be made for normal maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Equipment Inspections
- Physically observes the equipment’s overall appearance and condition identifying obvious damage and abuse.
- Operates the equipment and places it under routine to advanced operating conditions to fully evaluate the equipment’s functional condition.
- Completes an equipment inspection form and takes pictures as needed to support inspection findings, including an overall equipment condition summary.
- Complete Caterpillar CTS Undercarriage inspections on track-type tractors.
- Communicates all equipment inspections to the supervisor within two working days upon completion.
- For all rental equipment with over 60 continuous days for a customer rental a priority equipment inspection will be conducted within 7 business days of the 60-day continuous rental threshold.
- Inspects all rental equipment service and/or repairs before releasing the unit into the company fleet or fully closing the equipment’s original inspection report.
Customer Relations
- Assist with resolving any rental equipment’s field usage abuse/damage with the customer or assist in resolving any equipment usage abuse/damage GPEC’s insurance claims and repairs needed.
- May occasionally assist with equipment operator demonstration with the customer.
Other
- The Field and Branch Equipment Inspectors have interchangeable responsibilities and are “back-ups” for the other role as needed for such events as vacations, sicknesses, or other absences.
- Communicates daily with the Supervisor on any unusual equipment inspection situations, as well as progress on the weekly equipment inspection schedule.
- May periodically perform used and rental equipment receiving and delivery activities as needed.
- Ensures rental equipment is properly serviced, maintained, cleaned, and staged. This is mainly the Branch Equipment Inspector function.
- Routinely maintains and constantly secures all company-assigned equipment such as PC, telephones, etc.
- Works with Asset Manager to ensure CHVY machines over 2000 hours have a certified inspection on file and additional inspections every 1000 hours after.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- Must have a high school education with up to six years of technician’s work experience with at least four years servicing CAT equipment; or the candidate will have a two-year diesel technology or similar degree with up to four years of technician’s work experience with at least two years servicing CAT equipment.
- An internal GPEC candidate must at least be a Technician TE2 Level or higher to be eligible for this position.

Physical:
- Must be able to daily drive to customers’ locations and operate equipment in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to work an extended work schedule which at times could be up to 12 – 14 hours daily.
- Must be able to occasionally spend the night away from home or work on Saturdays to successfully inspect equipment.
Other:
- Must have strong interfacing and communications both orally and written with customers.
- Must have advanced beginner or intermediate PC software skills to successfully use MS Outlook, Word, and Excel
